Start With Your Child, Not the Curriculum

It's tempting to begin with the shiny box or the program everyone in your co-op is raving about. But the most joyful homeschool years usually start with a different question: how does my child learn best?

Take a moment to think about your child as a whole person, not a grade level:

• Do they enjoy hands-on projects, or do they prefer to read and reflect?
• Can they sit for a longer lesson, or do they do better in short, playful bursts?
• What are they naturally curious about—animals, building, stories, space, art?
• Where do they feel confident, and where do they need a little extra patience and support?

Consider Your Teaching Style

Here's something new homeschoolers are often relieved to hear: the curriculum has to fit you as well as your child. If a program asks you to prep for an hour every night and that's not your cup of tea, it won't matter how excellent the plan is—it won't get used.

As you shop, picture your reality and ask yourself which approach feels sustainable:

• Open-and-go lessons: scripted and ready each morning, ideal for when your hands are full.
• Project or interest-based learning: flexible and hands-on, following your child's curiosity.
• Classical: rich in history, logic, and language, building in stages.
• Charlotte Mason: living books, nature study, and short, gentle lessons.
• Montessori: child-led, tactile, and independence-building.

Focus on Core Subjects First

When everything feels like a priority, give yourself permission to start small. Build your foundation with the core subjects, get into a rhythm, and add enrichment once you've found your footing. There's no prize for doing it all in week one!

Begin here:

• Language Arts: reading, writing, grammar, and spelling
• Math: from early counting through upper-level math
• Science: curiosity-driven exploration of the world
• Social Studies: history, geography, and citizenship
• Critical Thinking: reasoning and problem-solving skills that carry across every subject

Here's a little secret from seasoned homeschoolers: almost nobody uses one publisher for everything. It is completely normal, and often smart, to love one company's math and a different one's language arts. Your curriculum can be a custom blend that plays to your child's strengths.
